Royal Court Theatre's Olivier Award-Winning Production of COCK Begins Performances Tomorrow, May 1

ROYAL COURT THEATRE’S OLIVIER AWARD-WINNING PRODUCTION OF

COCK

FEATURED IN THE DAILY NEWS

PERFORMANCES BEGIN TOMORROW:
TUESDAY, MAY 1

COCK-A-DOODLE-D’OH! The highly anticipated and provocatively titled play “C—,” which opens at the Duke on May 17, is forcing the show’s marketing team to be creative, since the production’s phallic title can’t be printed in a family newspaper (like this one). But the people behind Mike Bartlett’s play are finding a way around it. A poster and ad for the theatrical look at human nature has been created to fit all age groups. The outline of a rooster is filled with praise for the play, and beneath that image, a tagline reads: “And it’s called . . .” A set of empty quotation marks follows and beneath that the address to the play’s website, cockfightplay.com.

{module ad_left_body}As for the production itself, it features plenty of sexual energy. The show is about a gay man who splits with his partner, finds love with a woman and then is forced to pick between the two. The cockfight theme is in there somewhere: The audience watches the play from a stage set up like an arena.

“One of the most distinguished pieces of theatre to hit the London stage in the past year.  Arresting.”

The Observer

“Smart, prickly and rewarding view of sexual and emotional confusion.  Impressive.”

Evening Standard

“Compelling.  Written with toe-curling frankness, wry humour and gut-wrenching precision.  The hottest piece of new writing at the moment on the London stage.”
