Today, the producers of A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN announced the complete creative team members for the show’s Broadway premiere at the Lyceum Theatre (149 West 45th Street) this fall.

Joining the show’s writer and director Randy Johnson will be recent Astaire Award winning choreographer Patricia Wilcox (Motown), set and lighting designer Justin Townsend (Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson), costume designer Amy Clark (Chaplin), sound designer Carl Casella (Relatively Speaking), projection designer Darrel Maloney (American Idiot), music director Ross Seligman (One Night With Janis Joplin across the country), and original music director and arranger Len Rhodes (Mike Tyson’s The Undisputed Truth in Las Vegas).

A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN will begin preview performances on Friday, September 20, with opening night set for Thursday, October 10 at the Lyceum Theatre.

Mary Bridget Davies, will be reprising her role as Janis Joplin on Broadway, having taken the country by storm with her critically acclaimed performance. “Producing a version of the Joplin screech that starts somewhere around the singer’s ankles, wends its way up into the back of her throat and shoots off into the farthest reaches of the theater” (The Washington Post), Davies received the 2013 Cleveland Critics Circle Award for Best Actress in a Musical and was nominated for a 2013 Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Resident Musical.

Additional casting for the ensemble cast will be announced in the coming weeks.

Like a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Janis Joplin (Mary Bridget Davies) exploded onto the music scene in 1967 for three incredible years, reigning as the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. The unmistakable voice filled with raw emotion and tinged with Southern Comfort made her a must-see headliner from Monterey to Woodstock. A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN is a musical journey celebrating the inspirations of one of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s greatest legends.

The production arrives in New York following acclaimed engagements at Portland Center Stage, Cleveland Play House, Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater, Pasadena Playhouse, and Milwaukee Repertory Theater.

A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN is produced by Todd Gershwin and Daniel Chilewich, in association with The Estate of Janis Joplin and Jeffrey Jampol for JAM, Inc.

Since its premiere at Portland Center Stage in 2011, A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN has played to passionate audiences and stellar reviews across the country. Below is a sampling of the new musical’s critical response:

“Accompanied by an eight-piece band and a trio of backup singers, A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN sure manages to generate a joyful ruckus. Showcasing the variety of the blues greats Joplin claimed as inspirations, this show certainly has the entertainment quotient stacked in its favor, and achieves the exhilarating effect it desires. It’s a portrait, more than anything else, of a romance: a singer in love with the cleansing embrace of the crowd.”
– Peter Marks, The Washington Post

A NIGHT WITH JANIS JOPLIN reminds us that Joplin was fiercely and humorously bright. The musical simultaneously suggests that where Joplin was from proves to be less about Port Arthur, Texas – although we get bits of that, too – than about the bevy of African-American singers from whom she drew inspiration and to whom she generously paid homage throughout her career.”
– Mike Fischer, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

“In a cosmic collusion of persona and perception, this electrifying concert musical resurrects the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll with the sort of seismically sensational results normally encountered at stadiums and pop festivals… the premise is basic, unvarnished and supremely effective. Neither venue nor attendees may ever be the same.”
David C. Nichols, Los Angeles Times

“Davies taps into the blues-rocker's odd mix of dreamy naivete and world-weariness…and perfectly captures Joplin's yearning for authenticity, a desperation to be true to herself, to stay Janis, despite her rising fame. And then there is The Voice…when Davies' Janis takes a swig from a bottle and rips into "Summertime," a song we learn Joplin fell in love with as a girl, she's like no white chick you've ever heard…Davies can match the superstar's power and passion but also brings a purity of tone that Janis would have envied.”
– Andrea Simakis, Cleveland Plain Dealer

“With a voice shot through with Southern Comfort and cigarettes, Janis Joplin sounded like no one else in music during her too-brief career.”
- Erin Ruberry, The Huffington Post
